Frequently asked questions
What is URL encoding?
URL encoding converts special characters into a format that can be safely transmitted over the internet. For example, spaces become %20 and & becomes %26.
When do I need to encode a URL?
When passing URLs as query parameters, in form data, or in JSON. Special characters in URLs can break these formats if not properly encoded.
What is the difference between encodeURIComponent and encodeURI?
encodeURIComponent encodes more characters (including /, ?, #, &). Our tool uses encodeURIComponent, which is safer for most use cases including query parameters.
Can I decode any URL-encoded string?
Yes, as long as it was properly encoded. Malformed strings (like %ZZ) will show an error.
